A View From Spirit on Sol 5
An excellent view from the MER-A lander on its
fifth Martian day. There are so many wonderful features visible in this
composite frame that it is difficult to know where to start. The smooth depression
that dominates the left side of the image has been dubbed "Sleep
Hollow". It is likely an impact crater that has eroded by wind over
millions of years. Interestingly, it seems that Spirit has already been there.
The dark spots in the dust are probably airbag marks made as the lander bounced
across the surface. There are numerous dust or sand drifts and wind tails
around rocks that give a good indication of wind direction. And several peaks
and hills can be seen on the horizon. These landmarks provide valuable clues to
the rover’s exact location. The apparent slope of the horizon is due to the
slight tilt of the landing platform.
